Speaker 1: Dr. WANG Shiru (Department of Social Science)
Topic: The Asian Barometer Survey W5 in China
Introduction:
Asian Barometer Survey (ABS) is a long-term comparative survey study that is conducted in Asia-Pacific countries on a regular basis (roughly every five years). The surveys captured the change and development of political values, attitudes and behaviour in these countries. The workshops were to design the survey questionnaire and the execution of the fifth wave of ABS in China.
In the workshops, the format, wording and structure of the questions included in the survey questionnaires were discussed. To be specific, the questionnaire included indicators of political trust, democratic values, political participation, and national identity. All the participants made suggestions and comments on the design of the questionnaire from their expertise. Spatial sampling technique was adopted for ABS W5 in China. After the primary spatial sampling units were selected, each research team would be responsible to record household addresses in the selected unit for further random selection.
Speaker 2: Dr. CHENG Wui Wing, Andy (Department of Economics and Finance)
Topic: From Text to Tech: Sentiment Analysis Illustrated with ‘Sense and Sensibility’
Introduction:
Digitization efforts provide increasingly large amounts of text to answer old and new research questions not only in the Humanities, but also in various academic disciplines. Textual data provides a means of understanding human behaviour through a data-driven, analytical approach. The technical skills needed to automatically process and analyse texts at such large scale are in high demand. This seminar will touch the very basics of sentiment analysis* through Python, a powerful programming language widely used in corpus linguistics and Natural Language Processing (NLP). It will also share the research trends in business related studies through this digital resource in the Greater China region#.
